History allows us to find out about the people and places. That once lived in a local area. Local means close to an area where you live or are visiting. It could be in the local community or neighborhood. People, places and things change over time. Look at picture 1, it was taken 100 years before picture 2. It is the exact same building and is still being used today. Now that we know what local history is. Let us see how we find out about what is happening in our local area.

There are many ways of finding out about what is currently happening in a local area. History can help us understand the things that are happening in the present, and why they are like this currently (learning the history behind certain events). Have a look at this picture of Durban. From this picture you can see there is a sand castle competition. There are many people on the beach, so it could mean that the picture was taken during the holidays or on a weekend.
