Landmarks and explaining the way

The Landmarks and explaining the way module is part of the grade 4, Social Science CAPS Term 1 curriculum.  The module describes how to identify landmarks (natural and human-made) as well as explaining a short journey.

Identifying landmarks is very important when trying to tell someone where you are at that moment in time. A landmark is a feature that you might notice, it could be human made or natural. A natural feature could include a river, or a dam. Every settlement has a special feature that makes it unique from other places. These features are called landmarks.

When traveling or walking from one place to another, you would pass by many different landmarks. You could use landmarks to describe where you have come from and where you have been. So let us try this. You need to get home, which is at the 6th marker.

When you need to explain to someone how to get from one place to another; you could do so by mentioning a few pointers. Let us have a look at how we could explain where to go. Now that we have learnt all about landmarks, let us find out about describing what you see. First we need to make a stop at the coffee shop to buy drinks for the journey home.

When using maps, there would be markings to show which icons are roads, train tracks, and many other landmarks to help a person get to their destination or points of interest.
